After paying the world transfer record fee, at the time, of €12 million for Diego Maradona in 1984, Napoli gradually started to rebuild and rise back up the table and by 1986, they reached the top winning the Serie A title and Coppa Italia. Throughout the 1987-88 season, Napoli maintained their playing standard but just missed out on being Serie A winners for a second year running after being beaten by Milan. However they were entered into the UEFA Cup for the following 1988-89 season and won their first ever major European title.
